A scheduled ancient monument is one that is included in a schedule compiled and maintained by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport of monuments which appear to him or her to be of national importance. An ancient monument is defined in wider terms and is in the opinion of the Secretary of State of public interest by reason of the historic, architectural, traditional, artistic or archaeological interest attached to it. Not all ancient monuments are scheduled. There are sixteen Scheduled Ancient Monuments in Gateshead.
